HackX 2018, the inter-university hackathon organized by the Industrial Management Science Students' Association (IMSSA) and supported by Creative Software, was held with the aim to provide the undergraduates of Sri Lanka with a platform to shape their technology-based ideas into solutions for the prevailing problems of today's society.
Kicking off for the third consecutive year the event took place on the 21st and 22nd of September at the Dialog Axiata Auditorium, with 15 selected teams competing for the top spot.
A fascinating array of ideas were showcased ranging from information technology, mobile application development, web application development, game development and IoT.
Some of the innovative ideas showcased included an app to help find a parking space presented by the University of Ruhuna, an app called “Shilpa” that helps students find the right teachers for a selected subject, as well as a self-harvest management system for farmers presented by the two teams representing the University of Jaffna, a solution to help improve the voting process by having access to information on the performance of the political candidates by the University of Sabaragamuwa and an app called Rapid Serve that helps find the right people for repair work in the household by the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
Other teams creatively named as Team 404, Team 405, Team Mora and Z crew presented solutions to overcome the problem of road accidents in Sri Lanka, a flood awareness system and an app to help find the medicines you need. The awards of the event went to, Team Number Zero of University of Jaffna who took third place, Team 405 of Informatics Institute of Technology at second place and Codezilla from the University of Moratuwa bagging the top position.
Creative Software was a supporting partner of Hack X and the publication in conjunction with it, “Exposition” magazine. This is the second time Creative partnered with Faculty of MIT, University of Kelaniya for the same. Creative Software is a leader in Sri Lankan software industry and works closely with universities, to provide support for university hackathons, offer competitive internship programs and initiate projects such as the “Creative Sixes” cricket tournament.
